Tama County Jail Overview
Tama County Jail is operated by the Tama County Sheriff's Office. It is the only official detention facility physically located in Tama County that the research identified as holding the county inmate population. People booked into the jail can include current county detainees, warrant arrests, pretrial defendants, probation-violation holds, and short local custody cases. The roster is a county jail roster, not an Iowa prison locator, federal inmate locator, or immigration detention search.
Sentenced felony prisoners from Tama County are searched through the Iowa Department of Corrections Offender Search after transfer. Federal prisoners are searched through the Bureau of Prisons or confirmed through the U.S. Marshals district. Immigration custody is searched through ICE ODLS. A person can also leave the Tama County Jail roster after release, transfer, or another-agency pickup, so the county list is best treated as a current-custody source.
Tama County Jail Contact
The jail and sheriff's office are at the same public address in Toledo. The communications and jail number is the direct line for custody confirmation, visit scheduling, and immediate roster questions. Administration/Civil is the business and records-side number. The sheriff site footer lists regular business office hours, while jail custody operations may need confirmation by phone before any visit, bond question, or records request.

The staff listing helps identify the facility's local chain of responsibility without changing the roster lookup process.
Tama County Jail Capacity
The official jail page states that Tama County Jail has capacity for 18 inmates. The research count from the official current-inmates roster showed 13 visible people on June 12, 2026. That visible count is a point-in-time roster count, not a monthly average daily population. The roster updates twice daily, so the count can change before a visit, bond question, release, or transfer is complete.
Historical data adds useful context. The sheriff history page says the old county jail closed on June 15, 1970 because it could not be brought up to state standards. Tama County then housed prisoners in other county jails until August 7, 1990. The modern facility restored local jail capacity, but public sources did not locate a current average daily population dashboard, housing-unit list, or current demographic breakdown for the jail.
Search Tama County Jail Roster
The official current-inmates page is the public roster for Tama County Jail. It is a direct sheriff page and has one visible text filter labeled "Search by Inmate Name." It displays list-style entries, not full profile pages. The roster is updated at 3 a.m. and 3 p.m., and it warns that arrest without disposition is not proof of guilt.
- Open the Tama County current-inmates roster.
- Use the name filter. Last-name searching works well because names display in last-name-first format.
- Read the row for booked date, name, age, sex, charge text, and bond.
- If the person was just arrested or no result appears, call Communications/Jail at 641-484-3760.
- For filed court charges after booking, search Iowa Courts Online rather than relying only on roster text.
The roster does not show mugshots, booking number, date of birth, height, weight, race, arresting agency, housing unit, court date, release date, warrant number, charge statute, charge class, or per-charge bond type. It is still the first public check for current custody at Tama County Jail.

| Name | Yes | Displayed last name first. |

| Bond | Sometimes | Single amount when listed; blanks can appear. |
| Mugshot | No | No booking photos were shown in the inspected roster. |

Tama County Jail publishes set in-person visit windows and requires visitors to call the jail 24 hours in advance. The jail page does not publish a detailed dress code, child visitor rule, visitor property rule, public parking rule, holiday policy, or attorney visit schedule in accessible text, so visitors should confirm those points before arriving.

The public jail page did not publish a detailed mail policy, mail scanning rule, postcard rule, book rule, attorney-mail rule, or inmate mail address format in accessible text. Use the facility address for contact context, but confirm current mail rules with 641-484-3760 before sending anything.
Tama County Jail Booking
Tama County does not publish a detailed public booking manual in accessible web text. A conservative booking path starts with arrest or warrant pickup by a county, city, tribal, state, or other law-enforcement agency. The person is then transported or presented to the county jail or communications center, identity and charge information are checked, and jail staff create the booking entry if the person is accepted into custody.
A full jail booking record can include identity details, booking date and time, arrest reason, warrant information, bond, property, fingerprints, photo, medical screening, and housing classification. The public Tama County roster shows only a narrower set of fields. It does not publish booking time, fingerprints, mugshots, housing assignment, property inventory, medical screening, or court date. A new booking may not appear until the next 3 a.m. or 3 p.m. update.
- Booking
- Jail intake record created after arrest or warrant custody.

Tama County Jail Records
For a public report or sheriff record that is not available on the roster, the Civil/Records page gives a mail process. Requests for sheriff's office report copies should be sent with a self-addressed stamped envelope and $5.00 to Tama County Sheriff's Office, ATTN: Records, 100 N. Main St., Toledo, IA 52342. The records page says the department maintains current criminal records, court files, FBI Uniform Crime Reports, arrest information, accident and property records, missing-person records, and related department database entries.

The mail request route is separate from the current roster and should be used when a report copy or non-roster record is needed.
Tama County Jail History
Tama County has a distinct jail history. The sheriff history page says the first county jail was built in Toledo at the northeast corner of Broadway and State Streets. The original brick structure measured 30 feet by 34 feet, and the jail section included a 22-foot by 25-foot iron cage with sleeping compartments. The second story was occupied by the jailer. Sheriff R. E. Austin was the first sheriff to take possession of the new jail on January 8, 1874.
The old jail stayed in use until June 15, 1970. It closed because it could not be brought up to standards set by the state. From that closure until August 7, 1990, Tama County housed prisoners in other county jails. The former jail building is now the Tama County Historical Society and Museum at 200 N. Broadway in Toledo. That history is useful context, but current custody questions belong at the modern sheriff and jail building on North Main Street.

The historic jail page explains why current facility research points to the modern Toledo jail rather than the old Broadway and State Streets building.
Directions and Visitor Notes
Use 100 N. Main St., Toledo, IA 52342 for visitor navigation to Tama County Jail. The sheriff and jail building is in central Toledo near the county courthouse district. The county office-locations page places the courthouse at 100 W. High St. and the sheriff at 100 N. Main St., so court and jail business can be close geographically while still being handled by different offices.
From US-30, use the Toledo or Tama approach and continue into Toledo toward Main Street and the courthouse area. From IA-63, approach Toledo and turn toward the downtown government block. From nearby Tama, use local routes west or northwest into Toledo and follow local street signs. Public pages did not locate official visitor parking, public transit, ADA entrance, locker, or visitor entrance diagrams. Because visits require 24-hour advance scheduling, call the jail before traveling.
Note: Confirm visit approval, parking, accessibility entrance, ID, dress, and property rules with the jail before arriving.
Not Published Online
Tama County Jail publishes useful public access points, but it does not publish every operational detail. The current roster does not show mugshots, full booking packets, booking numbers, arresting agencies, housing units, court dates, release dates, charge statutes, or full bond orders. The jail page does not publish a full mail policy in accessible text, and the public pages did not locate a visitor parking rule, ADA entrance description, public transit route, detailed medical request process, grievance form, education program list, religious service list, or reentry program directory.
Those gaps should be treated as not published, not as permission to guess. Current custody should be confirmed with the jail. Filed criminal charges should be checked through Iowa Courts Online or the clerk. Sentenced state prisoners should be searched through Iowa DOC. Federal and immigration custody should be checked through the federal or ICE locator channels.
